C.O. Bigelow Chemists
It's the oldest pharmacy in the U.S., but it still manages to be a hot shopping spot for celebrities (Graydon Carter, Susan Sarandon) who live in the neighborhood. Founded in 1838, the family-run, tightly packed store stocks homeopathic medicine, high-end skin care, and everything in between, importing foreign favorites such as Apivita organic skin care from Greece and Klorane shampoos from France. Products aside, the Victorian-era oval-shaped glass counter and chandeliers make for a delightful setting to try new lotions and potions, and the ambience is worth a trip in itself.
Tip: Some of the most elegant—and surprisingly affordable—items are the shop's own Bigelow line of products in retro-modern packaging.
