On a quiet street just two blocks from L. L. Bean, in Freeport's old Masonic building, hides one of the finest jewelers in the state of Maine. Whether it's for Mikimoto pearl earrings or a custom engagement ring, those in the know make a beeline to Steve and Judy Brown's elegant, hushed boutique when they're in the market for one-of-a-kind pieces. Since 1968, the couple—who met in college in Maine and who have been members of the American Gemstone Society since 1983—are experts at jewelry design, creation, and refurbishment, taking extra pride to craft much of their work on site in their workshop. They choose only diamonds, opals, and other gems that “flirt” and “talk” to them. Prepare to be dazzled.
