St. Nicholas' Church

Print
3 Niguliste
Tallinn

Inside this towering medieval church named for the Patron Saint of Merchants, eight centuries of Estonian religious culture come alive. The 12-foot-tall carved tombstones of early Swedish noblemen, who ruled the country from 1570 to 1710, stand beneath iron chandeliers along with restored altarpieces. The biggest draw: the haunting Danse Macabre, a 15th-century painting by Bernt Notke that migrated mysteriously from Lübeck, Germany, to Tallinn. Drop in at 4 p.m. on weekends, when organ recitals make use of the church's stellar acoustics.
