Notre-Dame, Montreal

Designed by New York architect James O’Donnell, the Gothic Revival-style Notre-Dame Basilica faces Place d'Armes in Old Montreal. Although completed in 1829, the church later added its two towers a decade later—the western tower holds one giant bell and the eastern a 10-bell carillon. In 1982, Pope John Paul II made the Catholic church a basilica. Most evenings a light-and-sound show, And Then There Was Light, narrates Montreal history and illuminates the church’s gilded woods, which is based on that of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Less frequently held are orchestra, organ, and choir concerts.
