Mokuaikaua Church

A dark, rock archway constructed in 1920, adds to the charm of Hawaii's first ever Christian church, located by the ocean and the Hulihe'e Palace in Kailua-Kona. Founded by American missionaries with the permission of Liholiho (Kamehameha II), Mokuaikaua Church’s white steeple tops the stone walls that were crafted from temples of the old Hawaiian religion that have stood since 1837. Lava rock and crushed coral were used on the outside and koa wood on the inside. Artifacts and a model of the missionaries’ brig, or sailing vessel, the Thaddeus can be viewed during public tours.
