Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts
The only Le Corbusier-built structure in the United States, the Carpenter Center stands in stark contrast to its more staid neighbors on Harvard Yard in Cambridge. Completed in 1962, its styled concrete design—inspired by the human lungs—reflects Le Corbusier’s five points of architecture while incorporating flourishes characteristic of his later work, such as the ramp that sweeps through the interior, allowing visitors to see into the working art studios of Harvard’s Department of Visual and Environmental Studies. The Carpenter Center hosts avant-garde exhibitions in film, photography, animation, and illustration.
