Zoo Atlanta

800 Cherokee Avenue SE , Grant Park
Atlanta , Georgia

Founded in 1889—originally with animals stranded from a traveling circus gone bankrupt—Zoo Atlanta is now a state-of-the-art facility, where all creatures live in re-created habitats. One of the best loved is the Masai Mara, a simulated African savanna that's home to three giraffes, a pair of rhinos, and a family of lions, among other species. There's also Mzima Springs, where the resident herd of elephants can be seen cooling off at a watering hole; a fabulous group of mountain gorillas; and the ever-popular giant pandas (which got even more traffic after the 2006 birth of adorable panda cub Mei Lan).

Tip: Buy a CityPass online and you'll get a combo ticket that gives you entrance to both the zoo and the Georgia Aquarium. Prices are $42.50 for adults; $31.50 for kids ages 3–12.

Open daily.

Admission: $17.99 adults (12 and up); $13.99 seniors (55 and up); $13.99 military and college students; $12.99 children (3–11)
