Searching for a place to house a museum honoring American immigrants, Ruth Abram unearthed 97 Orchard Street, a historic apartment building that was completed in 1863 and sheltered almost 7,000 immigrants over the years. A tribute to the foreign working class, the Tenement Museum has six restored apartments, each telling the story of a different family who lived in this Lower East Side dwelling. The museum is open to guided tours only; however, tours of the Tenement and the neighborhood are available every day of the week.
