Museum of Fine Arts Vienna

Maria-Theresien-Platz
Vienna , Austria http://www.khm.at
43-01-525-240

Also known as the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts is the twin of the  Naturhistorisches Museum directly across Maria Theresien-Platz. Opened by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary in 1891, the structure resembles a palace with its elaborate sandstone facade and octagonal 60-foot dome. Inside, soaring ceilings adorned with goldleaf and intricate designs are a fitting introduction to the granduer of the imperial family's vast art collection which is showcased here. Centuries-old masterpieces by the likes of Raphael, Rembrandt, Titian, and Caravaggio are on display, as well as ancient artifacts of Greek, Egyptian, and Roman origin.
