Museum of Contemporary Art, LA
The marquee cultural institution in downtown’s sunken California Plaza, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) dates to 1979 and specializes in works that have surfaced since 1940. Director Jeffrey Deitch and chief curator Paul Schimmel preside over a growing art collection and a never-ending roster of exhibitions. Hallmark events have included tributes to pioneering architects like Louis I. Kahn and Frank Gehry, artists like Richard Serra and Andy Warhol, plus celebrations of genres like graffiti art. The multi-media showcase extends to performances, screenings, courses, and workshops, and extends to MOCA’s satellite branches at Little Tokyo’s Geffen Contemporary and West Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center.
