Visitors to Atlanta, especially Southern history and literature buffs, won't want to miss the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, operated by the Atlanta History Center. Located on Peachtree Street in Midtown, this three-level Tudor Revival building was built in 1899 and later converted into apartments, and it was in Apartment 1 that Mitchell wrote her Pulitzer prize-winning novel Gone with the Wind in 1925. Though the structure has burned twice in its long history, the museum contains historic reproduction of what "the Dump," as Mitchell called it, might have looked like when she was living and writing there.
