Victoria Mansion

Print
109 Danforth St.
Portland , ME
(207) 772-4841

You don't have to be a history or architecture buff to appreciate the sheer monied fabulousness of this hulking Civil War brownstone on mansion-lined Danforth Street in downtown Portland. Also known as the Morse-Libby House, the high-Victorian home is considered to be one of the finest examples of residential architecture from that era in the United States, and it charms and awes at every turn, from the grand green-carpeted central staircase to the carved wood cherub cornices—there's even a Turkish-style smoking room. Check in is at the Visitor Center, located in the adjacent carriage house. And don't miss the gift shop filled with Victorian-style goodies, like playing cards and children's books.

Insider Tip: For a glorious over-the-top Victorian vision of Christmas, time your visit for around the holidays (November 24–December 31), when the stately manse is festooned with exquisite seasonal flowers and antique decorations. It's a festive sight to behold.

Admission: $10 adults; $9 seniors; $3 children (6-17); free for children under 6. Open May–October, Tuesday–Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Sunday 1–5 p.m. Closed November–April, except for holiday tours from late November to mid-December.
