C&O Canal National Historical Park

1057 Thomas Jefferson St. N.W.
Washington , DC , United States http://www.nps.gov/choh/
(202) 653-5190

Now a historical site spanning 184.5 miles, the Chesapeake & Ohio canal was originally used to ferry goods like coal, lumber, and grain down the Potomac River, and it even played a roll in events like the Civil War, western expansion, and immigration. Today the park is a popular recreation spot with plenty of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding and spots for fishing and camping. Ice skating and sledding are allowed during winter months, and the park’s interpretive ranger programs host live reenactments of American canal life in the 19th century.
