Home of the philosopher Zeno, this ancient Greek city and world heritage site on the southwest coast of Italy remains somewhat under the radar for tourists. Now a part of the mountainous Cilento National Park (the second largest in Italy), the ruins include defensive walls, temples, paved roads, an amphitheater, and the sandstone Porta Rosa, the oldest and most complete Greek arched gate in the world. A medieval castle, partially built from the remains of a temple, perches on the former hilltop acropolis overlooking the town.
