Established in 1862, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), a block-shaped structure of steel made with fireproof concrete, limestone, and granite, has housed the printing presses that create the circulating currency of the United States. On weekdays, the BEP offers free 40-minute tours that include live views the currency production process from paper sheets to ready money. The visitor center has exhibits and currency products for sale. The BEP is located next to the Holocaust Memorial Museum and faces the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial.
