Anne Frank House
It takes roughly an hour to visit this museum, but many say it has a life-changing effect. The three floors of the house on the Prinsengracht present a chronological journey of the three years Anne Frank spent hidden with seven others in the achterhuis (“back house”—a secret annex), from ages 12 to 15, before being arrested and sent to Bergen-Belsen, where she died at age 17. The juxtaposition of supporting materials— archival photographs, newsreels and newspaper clippings, historical commentary—with Frank’s own heartbreaking journal entries is an experience that’s unique in Europe.
