J.D. Zellerbach, once ambassador to Italy during the Eisenhower administration, created Hanzell in 1948. Current proprietor Alexander de Brye took over operations in 1998 and has since added a cave cellar and new state-of-the-art winery. Innovation has been a key component to Hanzell’s success, as it was the first winery to use insulated stainless steel fermenters to control temperature, and is still harvesting Pinot Noir grapes from the oldest vineyards in the United States. Guests can tour the winery by appointment only, followed by a tasting of current releases or a more in depth library-tasting of previous vintages.
