Since the Royal Botanic Gardens were established in 1759 by Princess Augusta, they've expanded from nine acres to more than 300; Victorian-era greenhouses and the sprawling grounds overflow with 33,000 species of flowers, plants, and trees (the world's largest living collection). The landscape includes everything from formal gardens, picturesque lakes, and unmanicured parkland to a waterlily pond, attractive pergolas, and elevated walkways through the treetops. Azaleas, roses, rhododendrons, lavenders, willows, and cherry trees are all here. Picnic in a shady spot, but don't forget your brolly.

Insider Tip: During the summer, the garden hosts an evening series of outdoor live music concerts and fireworks displays to raise money for its educational and conservation work.

Admission: Adults, $26; free for children under 17.
