A drive along the westerly, warmer-watered side of the peninsula brings you through quaint villages and laid-back surfer communities. Start by taking the M3 south from Cape Town to Muizenberg—once an upmarket Jewish summer enclave, it's now a hub for the surfing set and is filled with quirky cafés and artisanal bakeries. Continue down the peninsula past Simonstown to Boulders Beach, home to a colony of jackass penguins, so called for their hilarious braying style.
