Many of Cape Town’s best contemporary galleries are in easy walking distance of one another in the city center. Begin at the AVA Gallery, a nonprofit multimedia gallery in historic quarters that gives special attention to Western Cape artists. From there, check out iart, an expansive modern space geared toward serious collectors, representing both well-established and up-and-coming talents. Nearby João Ferreira Gallery has an extensive collection of mixed-media works divided between two gallery spaces. Shutterbugs shouldn’t miss the Photographers Gallery ZA, where new trends in South African photography are showcased.
Insider Tip: Refuel after art browsing at Bird’s Boutique Cafe, an artsy spot in an 18th-century former residence where the sound of recorded birdsong wafts through the air. If that doesn’t revive you, the refreshing herbal teas and home-baked chicken pie will.
