Since its modest beginnings in 1978, this summer festival has grown to become one of Canada's biggest music events. Held in a public park at scenic Jericho Beach, the festival presents acts ranging from folk rock to alt-country, even jazz and global roots, on seven separate stages against a backdrop of the city skyline and snowy peaks. The weekend event typically draws 30,000 fans, who bring their own blankets for lawn seating. (Overnight camping is not permitted.) Local food vendors sell hotdogs, falafel, and other sustenance, while the beachfront Folk Bazaar has 160 craft booths.
