Clear Creek Distillery
Since the mid ’80s, Steve McCarthy has been harvesting fruit from his brother’s orchards in Parkdale, near the base of Mt. Hood, to produce localized fruit spirits using copper pot stills in Portland’s industrial Northwest. McCarthy makes eaux-de-vie like blue plum and Douglas fir, pear brandy, single-malt Scotch from peated barley, grappa, and more. They host open houses and production facility tours on Memorial Day and Thanksgiving weekends. Otherwise, visitors are limited to the tasting room and store, which resides behind a planter-fronted façade that consists of little more than a carpeted room with bottles for sale, a tasting table, and no seats.
