The Roosevelt Tavern

Matt Pool spent years fighting the city in order to open this watering hole. In Phoenix it's all but impossible to operate a business within a historic building, but Pool was determined to save the 100-year-old house and turn it into a saloon preferred by the local arts community. He opened his doors in 2007, and these days you'll see downtown lawyers alongside musicians chatting over warm, salty Virginia peanuts, grilled sandwiches, and hand-twisted soft pretzels.

Tip: Try the Roosevelt House Beer, a pale ale crafted especially for the tavern; Four Peaks (another favorite local haunt across town) brews it.
