“Ruby King Bakery” are the only English characters featured on the broad red awning of this Chinatown storefront (the rest of the signage is written in Chinese characters). Inside, the bilingual whiteboard menu lists classic Chinese-style baked goods—for example, egg tarts with golden, flaky crusts (costing only cents) or soft barbecue pork buns—on offer. Other freshly baked items include the nian gao (steamed buns made from azuki beans and rice flour), filled with mixtures of curried beef or chicken and shitake mushrooms, and snack-sized sweets like coconut and pineapple sponge cakes.
