Santa Teresa and Lapa

Some of Rio's most beautiful—and well-preserved—colonial architecture can be found in these adjacent up-and-coming neighborhoods. The soaring white arches of the Arcos da Lapa (the Lapa Arches, an aqueduct built in 1750) are surrounded by a vast cobblestoned square, and Santa Teresa's main street, Rua Almirante Alexandrino, is lined with restored, gaily painted 18thand 19th-century merchant houses and hilltop villas. Get there on the Bondinho de Santa Teresa, a trolley that trundles over the top of the Arches.
