The nation's oldest Catholic and Jesuit university was established in 1789 on a hill overlooking the Potomac and the village of Georgetown. The flagship building, the Flemish romanesque Healy Hall, was completed in 1882 and is a national historic landmark. Its clock tower stand 200 feet high, and its main auditorium, Gaston Hall, seats 750 and has hosted many visiting world leaders. Other campus highlights include the Healy Gates, the astonomical observatory, and Copley Lawn, a popular gathering spot for students during warm weather.
